Evictions rise following the end of state relief

For those who rent their homes and struggle to make ends meet, the thought of eviction is always a lingering thought. In New York, the state’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program originally received funding to help tenants but has run out of money, leaving many existing and new applicants frustrated. Even though this program has its application still open for tenants, and many applications for this rental assistance program every day, the program lacks enough funding to help those in need.

Rising rents contribute to the issue

One reason why evictions have started to rise is that rent prices are also steadily increasing. According to The Pew Charitable Trusts, from January to December of 2021 across the country, the average rent price increased by 16%.
